William Golding. The Man and His Books (Faber and Faber, 1986). Edited by Carey as a Festschrift for Golding this contains, among other contributions, essays by Ted Hughes and Ian McEwan and a poem, written for the volume, by Seamus Heaney. There is an important essay by Charles Monteith, Golding’s editor at Faber and Faber, about the collaboration that produced Lord of the Flies; also a transcript of an interview with Golding in which Carey questions him about his life and work.
